Notice Regarding Live Scan Forms

As of September 1, 2009, the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services will no longer supply hard copies of the Live Scan Forms. The Live Scan forms are available on our website at
http://www.bsis.ca.gov/forms_pubs/livescan/forms.shtml.

You must use the Live Scan forms provided on our website as they have the required Agency and code information. You must use the specific Live Scan form for the type of license, permit, certificate and or registration (i.e. Alarm Company Operator, Alarm Agent Registration, Private Investigator License, etc.) for which you are applying. The completed form will print in triplicate. Take all three copies to the Live Scan site. The first copy will be kept by the Live Scan operator, the second copy must be submitted with the application to the Bureau and the third copy is for your records.

See Live Scan Instructions for more information:
http://www.bsis.ca.gov/forms_pubs/livescan/use.shtml

Failure to use the Live Scan forms on the Bureau's website, with the appropriate Agency and code information, will delay the processing and issuance of a license. If you use the wrong form you will be required to resubmit the correct Live Scan forms and pay the scanning fee again.
Baton Strikes (Areas to Avoid)
ASP Batons
When using your baton, remember the areas to avoid:
  • Head/Face
  • Neck/Throat/Clavicle
  • Chest/Heart/Sternum
  • Spine/Spinal Cord
  • Tail Bone
  • Kidneys
  • Groin

Areas that could cause permanent damage or death should be avoided.

Use only the amount of force needed to repel the attack.  Render first aid if needed after baton use and write a detailed description of our actions in your report.

Firearm Permit Holders

All BSIS Firearm Permit holders are required to qualify every six months (once per quarter for a total of (4) quarters.  You must qualify on each caliber listed on your firearm permit.  Should you fail to qualify in the time frame required or should you miss a qualification, you must re-apply for your firearm permit.  Re-applying includes completing a 14 hr firearms course, a new live scan and the initial firearm permit fee.  To avoid this costly error, be sure to keep your re-qualifications current.

Federal Guard II must re-qualify once annually for all California Federal Contracts.

Effective July 1, 2004

Before submitting your security guard application, you must complete an eight (8) hour "Power to Arrest" training course and pass a written exam designed by BSIS.

Complete 16 hours of required security guard training within the first 30 days of the issuance of your security guard registration.

Complete an additional 16 hours of required security guard training within the first six (6) months of the issuance of the security guard registration.

CCW's Don't Be Fooled
If you are issued a concealed weapons permit (CCW) outside of the State of California you cannot carry your concealed weapon in California.  California will only recognize CCW's issued in this state.  Beware of scam artists who want to sell you a CCW permit that is valid for multiple states including California.  Contact your local Sheriffs department or search the ATF or DOJ websites for states which honor other CCWs.
